The US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where scientists pioneered neutron scattering, hosts two powerful neutron sources: the pulsed 1.8 MW linear accelerator-based Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the 85 MW steady-state High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). SNS and HFIR are progressing smart manufacturing by integrating simulation, real-time data and advanced automation. HFIR is also the western hemisphere’s primary supplier of isotopes for energy resilience, national security, medical and industrial applications. A Second Target Station is planned.
